Committee Charge

IRIS, UNAVCO, and the Antarctic GPS and seismic research communities are actively pursuing remote GPS and seismic instrumentation, power, and communication
systems for Polar network applications proposed to commence in the International Polar Year (2007-08). The UNAVCO and IRIS/PASSCAL facilities will seek advice and
assistance from a Polar Networks Science Committee (PNSC) that will ensure that the facility efforts remain well coordinated with the science needs and takes best advantage
of existing experience within the community. The IRIS/UNAVCO Polar Networks Science Committee will be charged with the following tasks:

  • To coordinate input to IRIS and UNAVCO from the science/research community regarding Polar GPS and seismic instrumentation, networks and facilities.
  • To advise and engage IRIS and UNAVCO on proposal initiatives related to technology and facilities for support of Polar GPS and seismic research.
  • To assist IRIS and UNAVCO with the development of acquisition proposals for Polar remote station components and systems.
  • To provide advice on tasks related to specific activities such as the MRI-funded IRIS/UNAVCO  project on Collaborative Research: Development of a Power and Communication System for Remote Autonomous GPS and Seismic Stations in Antarctica, and
  • oversight on the technical and logistic progress of the MRI and other such initiatives.
