Timothy Ronan- Data Engineer

As the newest member of the Engine Room (Operations group) at IRIS DMC, starting in June of 2018, I have the opportunity to contribute to IRIS’s complex ingestion and storage systems as a Data Engineer. I am working on building and testing tools that will enable the transition from traditional Dataless to Station XML metadata files. Throughout this process, I am exploring IRIS’s vast data holdings and am learning about the state of our current data repository.

I earned my master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Geological Sciences with an emphasis in Geophysics. My thesis focused on passive seismic and infrasonic signals generated by waves occurring in turbulent rivers. As an undergraduate at Boise State University, my geophysical research focused on volcanic processes, specifically falling rocks, creating infrasonic noise. After completing my studies, I worked as a contractor for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. We maintained a partial network of seismic and infrasound stations used to monitor nuclear weapons testing. Throughout my early career I had opportunities to travel to multiple international sites to collect data, contributing to research and analytics at the forefront of the seismological field. I am excited to mobilize my knowledge base to inform data systems at IRIS DMC and look forward to collaborating with and learning from my colleagues in Seattle.

In my spare time, I enjoy climbing, white water kayaking, running, and bicycling. I look forward to contributing to the field of Seismology as a Data Engineer at IRIS DMC, and to continuing my explorations of the Northwestern United States, which has always been my home.
